The Ministry of Production of Peru (Produce) has granted authorization to the Peruvian Institute of the Sea (Imarpe) to carry out an exploratory fishery for two types of species: anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) and white anchoveta (Anchoa nasus) in the southern Peruvian sea.

This was the conclusion of the Ministerial Resolution N° 252-2023-PRODUCE by which the explorations will begin and which set the conditions and periods in which they will be carried out. Thus, the Peruvian government has estimated that larger-scale purse seine fishing vessels will carry out the research. The maritime area covered by this fishery extends from 16º00′ S to the extreme south, starting from five nautical miles away from the coast. The period programmed to begin on August 3 will extend for ten calendar days.

Imarpe's role will be to coordinate and supervise the development of this exploratory fishing. Likewise, the agency will have to report to Produce on the advances of the research as well as make the necessary recommendations for management measures. In addition, the ministerial resolution stated that in case of detecting the presence of juvenile specimens or facing problems such as entanglement, authorities must take the corresponding actions, including the possible suspension of activities or the immediate closure of fishing areas.

An accurate and useful research

Fishing vessels participating in this activity must strictly comply with the regulations established in the ministerial resolution. Peruvian authorities will immediately exclude from exploratory fishing and ban from participating in scientific activities for one year those whose owners do not comply with the provisions of these regulations. In addition, they could face administrative sanctioning procedures by the laws in force.

Finally, the authorities established that Imarpe must present a final report. Imarpe will deliver this report to the General Direction of Policies and Regulatory Analysis in Fisheries and Aquaculture for them to adopt the necessary measures according to the results.
