Andfjord Salmon has announced that it successfully released some 200,000 smolt into the company's first land-based pool in Kvalnes, Andøya, last Saturday, June 25. The animals, which were supplied by Nordland Akva AS, have an average weight of 120 grams. The operation which, according to the CEO of Andfjord Salmon, Martin Rasmussen, "was well prepared and was executed in a safe and predictable manner", marks an important milestone for the company.
Andfjord Salmon aims to recreate the salmon's natural habitat in its land-based facilities in order to produce animals with very low energy consumption and as small an environmental footprint as possible. To achieve this, the company's continuous flow system is key. The ambition that the company has set, according to this announcement, is "to develop the world's most fish friendly and sustainable fish farming facility of its kind".
"Our concept is centered around recreating the salmon's natural habitat on land, as far as it is practically possible to do so. We are now entering a period with increasing amount of natural light and rising temperatures. This is good for fish health and development", Martin Rasmussen stated.
At the time of smolt release last Saturday, the biological conditions in the pool were exactly as expected and the smolt quickly adapted to their new environment. "This has been a great start, but the hard work starts now. We look forward to proving the many excellent benefits of our land-based fish farming facility in the coming months and years", Andfjord Salmon's CEO said.
The company has a license to produce 10,000 tons of MAB salmon at Kvalnes, which equates to a target production volume of 19,000 tons of HOG.
