GreenWave launches Kelp CoLab to boost sustainable seaweed innovation
GreenWave, a US non-profit focused on regenerative ocean farming, has opened applications for Kelp CoLab, a new initiative designed to develop kelp-based ingredients for the personal care industry.
The 10-month programme will bring together brands, ingredient suppliers, and technical experts to co-create sustainable, high-performance formulations. Rather than using kelp as a niche “hero ingredient,” the goal is to integrate it behind the scenes in everyday products as a functional, versatile component, GreenWave explained.
“Brands are excited about kelp. But we hear the same thing again and again: ‘We love the idea — we just don’t know how to work with it,'” said Grace Collery, Senior Market Development Program Manager at GreenWave, via a GreenWave news blog.
The focus of this year's Kelp CoLab will be on personal care, exploring kelp’s natural benefits such as hydration, skin barrier support, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to act as a natural emulsifier and texture enhancer. Unilever Foundry will serve as the programme’s "anchor" company, guiding development and sharing expertise.
GreenWave said that by pooling resources, Kelp CoLab aims to reduce the costs and risks of R&D, particularly for smaller brands. Participants will gain hands-on experience with kelp farmers and product developers, including visits to regenerative seaweed farms, strengthening links across the supply chain.
“No one company can build this market alone. When companies collaborate, they can get to solutions faster, instead of everyone reinventing the wheel,” said Sam Garwin, GreenWave’s Director of Market Development.
Applications to participate in the Kelp CoLab are open until 6 October 2025 at kelpcolab.org.
