Corel Lifecare, an India-based aquaculture health and life sciences company, has entered into a long-term research and development collaboration with The Aqua Consortium, a Switzerland-headquartered aquaculture R&D specialist.

Announcing the collaboration, Corel Lifecare said it was “driven by one clear objective: bringing real relief to fish farmers by addressing two long-standing and highly damaging challenges in aquaculture.”

The initial work will focus on parasitic crustaceans that remain a major constraint in several farming systems, including Argulus in Indian Major Carps, the most commonly farmed finfish in India, and Caligus, commonly referred to as sea lice, in salmon farming.

Corel Lifecare said such parasites have contributed to significant production losses and have, in some regions, driven repeated and often broad use of chemical treatments. The company argues that this approach has had several negative consequences and is ineffective in the long-term, leading to build-up of resistance as well as environmental stress.

“Through this partnership, we are working to develop science-led, responsible, and farmer-first solutions that focus on prevention, control, and sustainability, not short-term fixes,” Corel Lifecare said.

The Aqua Consortium described the agreement as a long-term strategic R&D collaboration combining its technical capabilities with Corel Lifecare’s product development capacity. The organisation said this would underpin a “Lab-to-Land” initiative aimed at translating research outputs into practical farm-level applications.

In a statement, The Aqua Consortium said the partners were “committed to delivering scientifically rigorous solutions for the aquaculture sector”.

In addition to finfish health, the collaboration will also cover shrimp aquaculture, with planned work on health management and yield optimisation throughout the production value chain, the Swiss firm said.

About the partners

Founded in 2023, Corel Lifecare is an Navi Mumbai-headquartered aquaculture health company focusing on disease management and biological challenges in fish and shrimp farming, which gained wider visibility in India after appearing on Shark Tank India.

The Aqua Consortium was established in Switzerland in 2021 as a specialist aquaculture research and development organisation, bringing together a network of experts in fish and shrimp health, nutrition and production.
