Aquaculture AI technology company ReelData is set to trial its biomass camera, ReelWeight, in partnership with the The Kingfish Company at its farming site in Zeeland, Netherlands, the companies have announced.
The collaboration marks the first attempt to adapt ReelData’s existing AI-based weighing technology for kingfish, enabling precise average weight estimation and weight distribution analysis for the species.
The ReelWeight camera, designed and manufactured by ReelData, has previously demonstrated success in measuring biomass for salmonid species, including Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr. The technology employs individual fish recognition to compile unique measurements, avoiding duplicate data from the same fish. ReelData claims this feature offers more accurate and robust population weight estimates compared to traditional methods, with the camera capable of analysing fish ranging in size from 25 grams to over 7 kilograms.
“We look forward to working closely with The Kingfish Company team over the coming months, and are excited about the opportunity to continue to develop the ReelWeight technology by expanding into an additional species, and adding even more capability to the ReelWeight camera," ReelData’s Commercial Director, Gareth Butterfield, said in a press release.
The Kingfish Company said it sees the trial as an opportunity to further refine its growth management practices.
“We eagerly anticipate the insights this innovation will bring, empowering us to fine-tune our productivity. At The Kingfish Company, our relentless pursuit of excellence in genetics, nutrition, and operational management makes a detailed understanding of growth performance absolutely vital," explained Bram Rohaan, Head of Production at The Kingfish Company.
ReelData has conducted several commercial trials with ReelWeight in 2024 and is planning installations across Europe, North America, and Chile, targeting Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr facilities. The partnership with The Kingfish Company will be the technology’s first application for kingfish.
