Aquaculture industry supplier ScaleAQ has appointed Thomas Fagerland Wiig as the new head of its software division, the company has announced.

Wiig has been a key figure within the Trondheim, Norway-headquartered company since 2019 and has most recently served as Group Chief Digital Officer (CDO). He will continue in that role while also now taking on leadership of the group's software division, succeeding Jon Arild Tørresdal, who has decided to leave the company, ScaleAQ said in a Norwegian language news update posted on LinkedIn.

ScaleAQ's software division currently includes around 43 employees and 5 consultants across its Bergen and Florø offices in Norway, in addition to its international offices in Vietnam, Canada, and Chile. The team develops digital tools and platforms for biological control, planning, and insights across the aquaculture production cycle.

The ScaleAQ group also employs a further 35 developers working on equipment software for its other subsidiaries, aquaculture infrastructure firm ScaleAQ Seabased, smolt production specialist Maskon, and service vessel supplier Moen Marin, the company said.

“We have highly competent teams with strong execution capabilities throughout the group. I’m looking forward to working closely with both colleagues and customers to create value going forward,” said Wiig on his appointment.

Focus on data flow and quality

In its announcement, ScaleAQ also indicated it is engaged in scaling up its digital offerings, in a strategy which includes increasing use of AI, analytics tools and data, including from land-based smolt production technology developed by its subsidiary Maskon.

“For our customers to succeed with their digital strategies, data flow must be open – both between our own applications and ScaleAQ equipment, and with third-party providers that support this. Insights and decision support must be accessible regardless of supplier – whether it's sensor data, feed consumption, or biological results," Wiig stated.

"Additionally, high data quality is essential. ScaleAQ has invested heavily in this area over many years, and we now have a technological edge in the market. This is crucial for achieving even more efficient and sustainable production in the future,” he added.

"ScaleAQ strongly believes in following the fish throughout its entire life cycle," the company said.

Acquisition and staff changes at ScaleAQ and its subsidiaries

In early June 2025, ScaleAQ confirmed it was in the process of acquiring Probotic AS, a Norwegian startup that offers solutions for the autonomous inspection and cleaning of aquaculture pens.

Meanwhile, ScaleAQ group company Moen Marin has announced a reshuffle of its senior executives, including the appointment of Lars Ivar Elvertrø as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

ScaleAQ appointed former head of head of ScaleAQ Seabased Audun Sivertsen Fjeldvær as its new group CEO in August 2024.
