The Association of National Fisheries Producer Organizations in Spain, Pesca España, has emphasized the importance of protecting the oceans, ensuring sustainable fishing, and safeguarding food security on the occasion of World Maritime Day, celebrated on September 25.

This year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has chosen the theme 'Navigating the Future: Our Ocean, Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity' to highlight the vital role oceans play as climate regulators, sources of food and employment, and drivers of the global economy.

According to Pesca España, more than 80% of global trade is transported by sea, which is why it is essential to work on reducing ship emissions, controlling pollution, and ensuring best practices throughout the maritime chain. This will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 14 – Life Below Water, and advancing the 2030 Agenda.

"As a sector that directly depends on marine resources, we understand that sustainability must be at the core of our activity and at the heart of every decision we make at sea," assured the Managing Director of Pesca España, Antonio Nieto.

Finally, the association advocates for advancing technological modernization, promoting circular economy practices on board, and protecting vulnerable species.

"At Pesca España, we work to show that it is possible to reconcile fishing activity with marine conservation — and that this is the best guarantee that future generations can continue to benefit from this essential resource," concludes Antonio Nieto.
