The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) has launched a new fishing research campaign aboard the oceanographic vessel 'Miguel Oliver' in Angolan waters.

The campaign, 'ANGOLA 2411,' which will run until December 29, aims to assess the status of crustacean populations and other demersal resources of commercial interest in Angola's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Therefore, temporal data series will be collected, which are essential for evaluating the evolution of fish stocks and ensuring their sustainable exploitation.

"The results of these direct and serial evaluations are crucial to ensuring the sustainability of the extraction of these stocks," explained Lourdes Fernández, a researcher at the IEO's Malaga Oceanographic Center and the scientific leader of the campaign.

Methodology

Through a bottom trawl gear called 'Conakry', abundance indices for different demersal species (fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods) estimations will be obtained.

In addition, the spatial distribution patterns of the main populations inhabiting the continental shelf and slope will be studied, as well as the demographic structure of the populations accessible to the gear used.

Finally, the campaign will also study the hydrographic variables of the water column over the shelf.

The collaboration between the IEO-CSIC and the National Institute of Fishery and Marine Research (INIPM) of Angola enables the conservation and sustainable exploitation of marine resources. Both institutions work together to strengthen Angola's scientific and technical capacity in fisheries.

In April, the 'Miguel Oliver' vessel carried out the MEDITS_ES_2024 campaign that evaluated the fishery resources in the western Mediterranean. This campaign was integrated into the National Program of Basic Data for the Spanish fishing sector, co-financed through the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA).
