The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, has highlighted the role of fishing associations as a model of social economy that promotes sustainability and profitability of the activity. He also emphasized their work for gender equity.
Additionally, Planas reminded of the agreements reached by the European Union Fisheries Ministers' Council. Regarding the Atlantic, he highlighted the positive results achieved for species of great market interest and high commercial value, which will ensure the stability of fishing activities.
He mentioned the "evident progress" made with mackerel, which has quintupled its quota, as well as the increase in quotas for monkfish and redfish, and the maintenance of quotas for southern hake, Norway lobster, and sea bream in waters shared with the United Kingdom.
The San Juan Bautista Fishing Association of Burela (Lugo) Celebrates 100 Years
Luis Planas presided over the centenary celebrations of the San Juan Bautista Fishing Association in Burela (Lugo), which has more than 300 members and a fleet of 82 boats operating in the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic.
The minister emphasized the efforts made in modernizing the handling and presentation of fish products through the Fish Producers' Organization and promoting their consumption.
He reminded that, in Burela, people from 42 nationalities are currently registered, with the fishing industry providing employment and a life project for them.
