The land-based hybrid flow-through farmer Salmon Evolution announced today the launch of what will be the first-ever consumer pack of smoked salmon from a land-based facility to be marketed in the Norwegian retail market. Included by NorgesGruppen in its Meny stores and selected Spar locations, the product will be available from next week.

"We have received countless requests from consumers eager to purchase our salmon," said Odd Frode Roaldsnes, Chief Commercial Officer at Salmon Evolution. "It is with great excitement that we can now share the news: Starting Week 8, this smoked salmon will be available in Meny and selected Spar stores all over Norway."

As mentioned, this launch is the result of a strategic partnership between Salmon Evolution and Lofotprodukt AS, which will be responsible for bringing smoked salmon made from Salmon Evolution's land-based fish to the Norwegian retail market. The salmon produced at Indre Harøy will be marketed under the premium Lofoten brand.

"Lofoten is a renowned quality brand which combines craftmanship and innovation that aligns perfectly with our values," Salmon Evolution CCO continued. With Phase 2 on track for first harvest in 2026, and about to release its fourth quarter 2024 results - and with them the year-end results - Salmon Evolution already announced in an operational update in mid-January that it had closed 2024 with solid operating and financial results.

Introducing land-based salmon alongside conventional options

A pioneer in the hybrid flow-through system (HFS) - which, with a closed and controlled environment and continuous optimization of water quality, combines the benefits of land and sea farming, prioritizing biology and reducing operational and biological risks -, all those involved in this launch emphasized that this smoked salmon represents a breakthrough in food production.

"Our shared goal is to increase seafood consumption and offer consumers more choice on the shelf by introducing land-based salmon alongside conventional options," explained Øystein Rist, CCO of Lofotprodukt AS. "Lofoten is always on the lookout for innovative solutions. We support new methods of seafood production and are excited to explore the opportunities that land-based aquaculture can create for the future."

Like Lofotprodukt, NorgesGruppen also plays an important role in bringing smoked salmon from Salmon Evolution's land-based facility to the retail market in Norway. The grocery company said this launch supports its goal of increasing access to healthy, high-quality seafood products for Norwegian consumers.

"NorgesGruppen is committed to making fish and seafood accessible to everyone through a diverse selection. The launch from Lofoten and Salmon Evolution contributes to a broader range for our customers at MENY and SPAR. Furthermore, we aim to gain deeper insights into different consumer needs and hope that this product will create lasting value over time," said Camilla Moe, Category Manager for Fresh Fish and Seafood at NorgesGruppen.
