The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) has launched the new Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) Salmon Farm Standard – Issue 3.0, which introduces stricter requirements.
This new edition features stricter requirements related to human rights, enhanced protection of predator species, and more rigorous standards for humane slaughter methods. In addition, all salmon farms will be required to undergo a mandatory two-day audit.
Lastly, GSA will place greater emphasis on more severe procedures to ensure diving safety, the inclusion of the forage fish dependency ratio (FFDR) as a mandatory metric, and the welfare of cleaner fish.
In 2024, the new Salmon Farm Standard Issue 3.0 was released for public comment. This encouraged public participation in reviewing updates to ensure the standard remains comprehensive and effective.
This version already had significant updates, focusing on areas like health and safety for diving staff, interactions with wildlife and predators, animal health and welfare, and biosecurity and disease management.
