RE:OCEAN was born with the goal of producing 10,000 tons of farmed salmon in Sweden in a sustainable way. To achieve this, the company has partnered with Schneider Electric, a world leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, which will help them optimize all key areas of the operation. When the entire plan is implemented, the company will be able even to measure the CO2 impact of each and every salmon it produces.

CO2-neutral production facility

According to the release made public by Schneider Electric, the goal of this partnership is for RE:OCEAN to use its hardware and software solutions at the land-based salmon farm and thus show the way for the digital and sustainable transformation of the salmon industry. The collaboration will enable RE:OCEAN to produce local and sustainable salmon in a CO2-neutral production facility. The same objectives will then be applied to slaughtering and processing.

"Our clear ambition is that our production of locally farmed sustainable salmon should be done with a minimal climate footprint", said Morten Malle, CEO of RE:OCEAN. "It is therefore completely natural for us to partner with experts who can help us achieve those goals. Schneider Electric is the obvious choice for us when it comes to energy optimization and solutions across systems, and we are looking forward to the collaboration".

Optimization of key areas

Thanks to Schneider Electric's hardware and software solutions, RE:OCEAN will be able to monitor and analyze production data, operational processes and systems throughout the plant in real time. In this way, the Swedish company will be able to optimize all key areas of the operation with preventive maintenance, efficient use of resources, process optimization, and even measure the CO2 impact of each of the salmon it produces.

As a result of this collaboration, specific action plans for climate strategy and targets will be developed by making visible greenhouse gas emissions from production, the value chain, purchased energy, and so-called Scope 3 emissions in accordance with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This climate action aims to limit the Earth's temperature increase to less than 2°C compared to the pre-industrial era, as agreed at the Paris Climate Summit.

Sustainability, an ongoing process

Both companies are convinced that circular economies and holistic production facilities are important contributions to addressing global climate challenges. "It is inspiring to work with a company like RE:OCEAN, which is a clear pioneer in sustainable food production", said Anders Press, industrial automation sales manager at Schneider Electric. "We are proud that RE:OCEAN has chosen Schneider Electric as a partner in sustainability, energy optimization and automation".

Following that vision, the Swedish land-based salmon producer will also protect the local Säffle area by building its own wastewater treatment plant. Biodiversity is a pillar of the company's sustainability strategy and ensuring a minimal environmental footprint is crucial to them. "We all have a responsibility to take care of each other and our planet", says Tanja Charlotte Krogh Sørensen, head of RE:OCEAN's quality control and sustainability department. "Sustainability is a continuous process driven by ecological visions, knowledge and partnerships. These are values that RE:OCEAN and Schneider Electric share, and we are very excited to help revolutionize the way salmon is produced".
