Thai Union Group PCL. has confirmed that it will provide free Wi-Fi access on its fishing vessels for all crew members, thereby reinforcing its commitment to social responsibility toward its employees.
As part of its SeaChange® sustainability strategy, the world's seafood leader aims to have 50% of the tuna sourced from long-distance fishing vessels equipped with Wi-Fi access by the end of 2026, and 75% by 2028.
Through this initiative, Thai Union will empower its workers by improving their working conditions, contributing to more secure livelihoods and a healthier future for families and communities.
"Providing free Wi-Fi access is a tangible step to improve their daily lives, allowing them to connect with loved ones, access essential information, and report any issues more easily," explained Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability Officer of Thai Union Group.
Starting with the vessels that spend the longest time at sea, Thai Union is the first global seafood processor to make this commitment and aims to set a new benchmark for the industry.
"This target reflects a realistic starting point given the technical complexities, vessel diversity, and uneven satellite coverage inherent in deploying robust connectivity at sea. Our immediate objective is to demonstrate operational feasibility and build momentum," added Brennan.
In 2025, Thai Union Group secured the first-ever Blue Loan for Thailand's seafood industry, valued at $150 million, from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
This milestone has also provided a boost for advancing SeaChange® 2030, as the group confirmed that it will use these funds to expand sustainable shrimp sourcing in the country, supporting its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
