Nova Scotia Community College’s (NSCC) Shelburne campus will have the first fisheries simulator in Canada allowing students to execute land-fishing vessel practices. Nolan Young, MLA for Shelburne County, announced the funding on behalf of Advanced Education Minister Brian Wong
Regarding this initiative, Young said: "As Nova Scotians, we are proud of our connection to the ocean as a way of life and livelihood, and we are pleased to be the first in Canada to adopt this new fisheries technology."
On the other hand, he encouraged private parties to participate: "We look forward to welcoming future entrants and industry partners to learn and train in this safe, simulated environment."
According to the Government of Nova Scotia, NSCC has already bought 12 laptops and hardware and the new equipment will be installed and ready to use this fall.
NSCC Shelburne's Cube – Space for Innovation focused on students' new ideas and challenges regarding fisheries and ocean topics. Also, the simulator will help broaden participation in fishing vessel operations, training, and careers.
"This new simulator will make the college a leader in fishery and marine innovation and will ensure we have a means to provide students with a realistic experience of operating a fishing vessel in a safe, simulated environment," the President of Nova Scotia Community College Don Bureaux, assured.
Finally, the government hopes that this project attract students and support their training and professional development as the North American country will need 19,000 new workers over the next 10 years.
