Iceland's GeoSalmo has a new executive chairman, with the appointment of former Salmon Evolution CEO Håkon André Berg. Alongside assuming this key leadership role, Berg has also made a significant investment in the company, becoming a major shareholder.

Berg brings a wealth of experience to GeoSalmo, having previously served as CEO of Norway's Salmon Evolution, a globally leading land-based salmon farming company. During his tenure, he guided Salmon Evolution from its early stages through to its first successful harvest, but ultimately decided to step down in October 2022, and was replaced as Salmon Evolution CEO by Trond Håkon Schaug-Pettersen.

Berg's background also includes extensive experience in private equity, business development within the seafood sector, and leadership roles in several companies, including his most recent position as CEO of the Norwegian investment firm Skeie teknologi.

"The beginning of an exciting new chapter for GeoSalmo"

"We are delighted to welcome Håkon to the company as Executive Chairman and shareholder," said GeoSalmo CEO Jens Þórðarson in a press release. "His unique success in developing Salmon Evolution into an industry leader will bring significant strength to our team as we embark on the next exciting phase of our journey. This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for GeoSalmo."

“I am very excited to take a key role in GeoSalmo and look forward to work closely with the company’s excellent management team on the execution of one of the most ambitious aquaculture projects globally," said Berg.

"GeoSalmo’s approach to land-based farming is based on the same values and priorities that I consider to be fundamental, and I know that we have all the factors needed to create a success story," Berg added.

Like Salmon Evolution, GeoSalmo will utilise hybrid-flow through technology for its facility. The company is in the process of establishing a land-based salmon farm near Þorlákshöfn, with a production capacity of at least 33,000 tonnes, and has already made significant progress, securing land, energy, and other critical resources to begin construction of its site.
