The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) announced that Citlali Gómez Lepe, President of COMEPESCA, has joined its Board of Directors. The trade association expressed its satisfaction with the addition of the Mexican, a professional who has more than two decades of experience in commercial and rural aquaculture and participates in various associations in the sector.
"We are thrilled to welcome Citlali to our Board of Directors," said GSA CEO Mike Kocsis. "Her diverse perspective and breadth of experience in the seafood industry will be an enormous asset as GSA continues to strengthen its mission of advancing responsible seafood practices worldwide."
Gómez Lepe has been involved in rainbow trout farming and the development of small-scale projects for responsible aquaculture and agriculture in central Mexico since she and her family founded Neminatura, a multi-species aquaculture facility, in 1992.
She is also the founder of Pesca con Futuro (Fishing with a Future), a market-based industry movement that seeks to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and promotes both responsible production and consumption of sustainable seafood products in Mexico, thus ensuring the preservation of the country's aquatic biodiversity.
Pesca con Futuro is part of the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishing and Aquaculture Products, COMEPESCA, whose objective is to promote the consumption of Mexican seafood products, and which Citlali Gómez Lepe has chaired since 2017. She is also the founder of Alpescas, the Latin American Alliance for Sustainable Fishing.
Commenting on her appointment, Gómez Lepe said she's honored to join the Global Seafood Alliance's Board of Directors. "I believe strongly in GSA's mission to promote responsible practices throughout the seafood supply chain," she said. "I look forward to contributing my experience and passion for this industry to support the organization's important work worldwide."
The Global Seafood Alliance is an international non-profit trade association dedicated to advancing responsible seafood practices through education, advocacy, and third-party assurances. In that effort, late last year, the GSA unveiled its updated seafood processing standard and launched its new traceability platform, 'Prism', in partnership with Wholechain.
In 2024, GSA's third-party certification programs, Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and Best Seafood Practices (BSP), grew by 5% and achieved an 88% retention rate. A total of 4,168 facilities in 45 countries achieved the certification, with the majority being farms. The rest were distributed across 540 processing plants - including aquaculture and wild capture -, 346 hatcheries, and 150 feed mills.
