The leading authorities from Chile’s Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism and Brazil’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the sustainable management of fisheries and aquaculture resources through bilateral cooperation.
This initiative took shape during President Gabriel Boric's state visit to Brazil and as part of the Triangular Cooperation Project "Strengthening the Governance of Small-Scale Fisheries," driven by small-scale fishing organizations from Chile, Brazil, and Andalusia (Spain).
The agreement is set to be implemented in areas such as the fight against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing; monitoring, control, and surveillance; gender equity in the sector; climate change adaptation; scientific research and technology transfer; and food security and sovereignty.
Additionally, the collaboration will strengthen small-scale fisheries and aquaculture (SSFA) and promote the exchange of experiences, including technical training, visits, and events focused on fisheries and aquaculture management, technology, gender equity, and sustainable practices.
According to Chile’s Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), a working group will be established to identify, plan, and implement the actions outlined in the MoU.
In 2024, Chile and Peru also reaffirm their historic bilateral cooperation between both countries on fishing industry sustainability by improving the management of shared resources, as well as strengthening food security and the resilience of communities and marine ecosystems that are part of the Humboldt Current (GEMCH).
