The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) in Chile has carried out a special inspection campaign to ensure compliance with fishing and sanitary regulations during Holy Week, when the consumption of seafood increased fivefold.
Operations carried out together with the Navy, Carabineros (national police), the Health Authority, the Internal Revenue Service, the Investigative Police (PDI), and Customs are responsible for conducting these inspections of fishing activity in fishing areas, landing points, transportation, and commercialization.
"Thanks to the 581 operations carried out with the Sustenta Network, we were able to monitor 4,448 tons of legal catch, 2,658 vehicles, and more than 4,800 agents across the entire value chain," explained Sernapesca's National Director, Soledad Tapia.
A total of 84.1 tons of illegal marine resources have been detected, resulting in 84 violations. Additionally, 14 vehicles used for transportation have been seized.
Among the main resources confiscated are common hake (16.22 tons), jack mackerel (14.64 tons), northern cojinoba (11.98 tons), and jumbo flying squid (8.6 tons).
Finally, the agency confirmed that this year there has been an increase in the participation of other institutions, mainly Carabineros and the Navy, reaching 90% of the inspections carried out.
Chilean institutions responsible for regulating, controlling, and supervising the fishing and aquaculture sector expressed before Holy Week their intention to collaborate to combat illegal fishing and strengthen enforcement in national waters.
