India bets on technology to drive freshwater aquaculture development

The ICAR–Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), organized the national workshop 'Freshwater Aquaculture Technology Dissemination in India: Charting the Way Ahead' to promote the adoption of proven freshwater aquaculture technologies.

During the technical sessions, the Directors of the nine Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARI) analyzed the status of technology dissemination by zones.

Likewise, initiatives related to technology demonstration and capacity building were reviewed, as well as matters concerning the Prime Minister's Programme for the Development of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

The conclusions of the workshop focused on strengthening the linkages between research and extension in order to scale up freshwater aquaculture technologies at the national level.

Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of ICAR, acknowledged the outstanding work of ICAR-CIFA and emphasized the crucial role of freshwater aquaculture in increasing farmers' incomes, ensuring nutritional security, and strengthening rural livelihoods.

Finally, Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, confirmed the intention to develop 34 fisheries clusters and reiterated the importance of teaching how to apply high-impact technologies tailored to the needs of each region.
