Spain has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Morocco to promote innovation, aquaculture development, water management, support for rural areas, and combat illegal fishing.

The signing took place in the presence of Spain's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, and Morocco’s Minister of Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Ahmed El Bouari, during the 13th High-Level Meeting.

According to Planas, with these agreements, Spain and Morocco "consolidate their strategic relationship to achieve common objectives, face current challenges in the sector, and ensure the sustainability of production."

Main objectives

Both countries aim to support joint scientific research, the development of sustainable technologies in aquaculture, and the enhancement of seafood products.

Likewise, the agreement will promote coordination in the monitoring and control of fishing vessels, the exchange of experiences and technical knowledge between experts and companies from both countries, and vocational training in the fisheries sector.

Lastly, both countries will take part in a monitoring committee made up of representatives from both ministries, which will draw up annual action plans and assess the results achieved.

In 2024, Spain participated in the 3rd edition of the Aquaculture Forum celebrated in Tangier, under the theme 'Strong Partnership for a Sustainable Aquaculture Industry'.
