The collaboration of four Finnish companies will make it possible for consumers in this country to be the first to try a new sustainable rainbow trout that has been fed on insect protein.
This product will be marketed under Kalaonni Arkinen, a Finnish seafood brand, and will be available for only two weeks. Moreover, the fish farms of Vääräniemi and Kalavapriikki will make the products available to consumers with the help of insect protein producer Volare and Finland's only fish feed manufacturer, Alltech Fennoaqua.
Regarding this initiative, Kalavapriikki CEO Jari Korhonen said: "Our customers appreciate responsible choices, but above all, the food should be of high quality and tasty. We are proud to be able to offer something new and interesting to consumers."
In more detail, Volare produces insect protein powder using by-products from the food industry. Thanks to its technology, it keeps these by-products instead of incinerating them and turns them into an eco-friendly alternative. Currently, Volare produces insect protein at its pilot plant in Hyvinkää and is planning its first industrial-scale plant in Finland.
"Insects are part of the natural diet of salmonids, and Volare has a unique production method that saves energy, is fossil-free and produces no side streams or waste," Volare's Commercial Director Jarna Hyvönen explained.
Finally, Alltech Fennoaqua CEO Tomi Kantola noted: "In the future, insect protein could be part of recipes for sustainable fish feed that promote circular economy principles. In Volare's case, the raw material would still be domestic, and we have a strong desire to source more and more raw materials locally. This not only brings environmental benefits, but also supports protein self-sufficiency and employment in Finland."
