Norway can now export aquaculture products to Brazil

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) and the Brazilian authorities have agreed on conditions enabling the export of aquaculture products from Norway to Brazil, with Norwegian authorities authorized to issue health certificates for exported products from 15 September.

The health certificate covers all species and products from aquaculture, from fillets to whole, gutted fish, as well as all forms of preservation, including smoked products.

However, aquaculture facilities that have suspected or proven cases of the fish diseases Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) and Pancreatic Disease (PD) will be barred from exporting to Brazil, Mattilsynet has confirmed.

Negotiations on exports began in 2021

"The Norwegian Food Safety Authority works with market access for Norwegian seafood and agricultural products abroad. A number of countries that Norway exports to have requirements for food and input product safety, animal health, animal welfare, fish health, fish welfare and plant health, and Brazil is among these," said Ingunn Midttun Godal, managing director of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

"Through negotiations, which have been ongoing since 2021, we have now reached an agreement on a certificate for products from aquaculture, and that is pleasing for the Norwegian seafood industry," Godal added.

Brazil a large and important market for seafood, including salmon

As the sixth most populous country in the world with over 200 million inhabitants, Brazil is a significant market for seafood, and is particularly important for Chile's salmon farming industry.

"It is important for the Norwegian farming industry that we have now gained access to sell farming products to the Brazilian market. The Norwegian authorities work continuously to ensure market access for seafood to more and new markets. Access to more markets ensures flexibility for the seafood industry and provides more opportunities for trade and growth," said Fisheries and Oceans Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss.

Mattilsynet points out that traditionally, Norwegian fish exports to Brazil have consisted of cuttlefish, but the possibility of exporting salmon "opens up a new and large market for the Norwegian aquaculture industry".

Norwegian authorities emphasize that the new health certificate has specific special requirements for the products, and urges exporters to familiarize themselves with the requirements on the Norwegian Food Safety Authority's website.
