The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) has published its ninth annual sustainability report which highlights a 48% decrease in the average use of antibiotics since 2013 and an eco-efficiency of feed ingredients improvement. Along this, it accounts 23.000 more individualls dedicated to sustainable salmon farming.
In more detail, the report explains that thanks to the members' production ASC certified in 2021, salmon faming works under the highest environmental standards. Besides, the inclusion of innovation and diversification when including resources from utilizing novel sources like algae. As well as responsible use of certified marine ingredients.
Regarding all this, Sophie Ryan, CEO of GSI, stated: "We want the GSI Sustainability Report to be a sign of members' shared commitment. So, we can grow a great product in the most responsible way. But the proof is in our data and we know that good is never good enough."
Finally, GSI listed as points to improve; continuing to grow its ASC certification levels, reducing the use of antibiotics and salmon mortality rates.
The GSI Sustainability Report wants to mark a major milestone for the salmon farming industry and its commitment to transparency. Further, the report aims to provide an unique opportunity to access data from 13 salmon farming companies' global operations. All reporting against the same 15 metrics, year-on-year.
