Feed manufacturer Alltech has achieved two Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Certifications in Europe, becoming the first producer to reach this standard in both Germany and Finland.

The company’s feed mills - Alltech Coppens in Nettetal, Germany and Alltech Fennoaqua in Raisio, Finland - have now been certified under the ASC Feed Standard, which sets global requirements for responsible ingredient sourcing and social accountability in aquafeed manufacturing.

Announcing the newly certified mills, the ASC pointed out that its Feed Standard is the first of its kind to cover the full supply chain for aquaculture feed, including marine ingredients such as fishmeal and fish oil, and agricultural commodities such as soy, palm oil and wheat. Certified companies must show that these materials are responsibly sourced and that they comply with criteria on working conditions, occupational safety, and environmental management.

Launched in May 2025, ASC Feed Standard complements the ASC Farm Standard, which governs responsible practices on aquaculture farms. From 31 October 2025, all ASC-certified farms must demonstrate that they source feed only from ASC Feed Standard-certified facilities.

Certification process boosted traceability and sustainability, says Alltech

Aisla Jones, feed engagement and UK markets manager at ASC, congratulated Alltech on achieving the ASC certification, adding, “This demonstrates a commitment to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement. By embedding responsibility at the very start of the aquaculture supply chain, they are helping drive the change our industry needs.”

As part of the certification process, both feed mills provided detailed documentation on raw materials, suppliers, and social and environmental performance during the certification process. Alltech said these efforts have improved traceability and strengthened its sustainability practices.

“This is an important next step on our sustainability journey,” said Ronald Faber, Alltech's global aqua lead and CEO of Alltech Coppens. “ASC is one of the world’s most recognised certifications, and we are very proud to have achieved it. The preparation required time, perseverance and strong teamwork. The process was intense but has helped us make our operations more transparent and sustainable - a gain that goes far beyond certification itself.”

“There is demand in the global fish market for products whose sustainable and responsible production can be demonstrated to consumers through standardised certifications such as ASC,” added Susanna Airaksinen, development manager at Alltech Fennoaqua.

“Thanks to the certification process we have undergone, we will be able to continue supplying feed to all ASC-certified farms even after the new, stricter requirements come into force later in October,” she added.
