Bluegreen Group, the technology provider responsible for the design and construction of SalMar's Marine Donut, has confirmed the successful completion of two salmon production cycles at the facility.
In early July, the final phase of the test program was completed, and nearly 1,000 tons of salmon were delivered from the facility. Thanks to the risk-reduction measures implemented by the Norwegian salmon-farming company and Bluegreen, the unloading was safe and completed within 12 hours.
In 2024, Bluegreen already reported that during the trial period, critical parameters such as water quality, fish health, and technical performance were closely monitored, and the facility achieved a very low fish mortality rate of 0.8%.
"We are very grateful for the trust SalMar has shown us by adopting the technology, and for the close collaboration throughout the project. It has been crucial for us to have come this far," said Nils-Johan Tufte, CEO of Bluegreen.
In addition, SalMar, which has led the operation and execution of the test program, collaborated in implementing structural reinforcement measures to reduce the load on the structure. This prototype salmon farm has already delivered strong biological results, ensuring high fish welfare.
This is particularly significant considering that Bluegreen reported some damage to the Marine Donut in June, which did not result in any fish escape and was quickly resolved to secure the facility and carry out the necessary repairs.
"We have learned a lot along the way, and used the experience to improve the commercial version of the technology. Marine Donut 2.0 has received structural upgrades," assured Geir Andresen, Commercial Director at Bluegreen.
Finally, Tufte added, "This project shows what is possible when you combine technological innovation with the experience and execution ability of a player like SalMar. We are proud of the collaboration and happy to be part of developing solutions for the aquaculture of the future. We look forward to embarking on further commercialization of Marine Donut."
