Norwegian technology company Bluegreen, maker of the closed containment aquaculture facility the Marine Donut, has announced the expansion of its operations through a new lease agreement for industrial land in southern Norway.

The company has secured up to 40,000 square meters of space in a developing industrial area on the country’s southern coast.

"The plan is to establish a specialized yard dedicated to the production of large closed fish farming systems, including our own technology, the Marine Donut," Bluegreen stated in a news announcement.

The agreement includes an option to purchase the property, located within the 370-hectare Frier Vest site, on the coast of Frierfjorden in the Grenland region of Norway. The site is being developed with a focus on green industry, and includes access to a new, state-of-the-art "smart port" operated by Grenland Havn.

Bluegreen says it plans to develop a dedicated production yard at the site for large-scale, closed-containment aquaculture systems, including its flagship product, the Marine Donut. The company already operates on the eastern side of the Frier Vest site, and said its two production yards will operate in tandem.

"The expansion at Frier Vest gives us the opportunity to scale up the production of closed containment aquaculture systems, while contributing to the development of a forward-looking industrial area with a strong focus on sustainability," said Bluegreen CEO Nils-Johan Tufte, in a news announcement.

Established in 2015, Bluegreen specializes in thermoplastics and engineering services for the aquaculture, water management, and environmental sectors. In recent years, the company has gained attention for its innovation in closed containment aquaculture systems through its development of the Marine Donut, a circular, a fully enclosed floating system.

The company announced in December 2024 it had successfully completed its first full-scale test of the Marine Donut, delivering promising results which the company said "prove that the Marine Donut is a commercially viable product".
