Jiangsu Lianshen Marine Technology has confirmed that the world's first 100,000-ton salmon farming vessel, Suhai No. 1, has successfully harvested and marketed its first batch of fish.
The Suhai No. 1 is a mobile aquaculture vessel with a displacement of 130,000 tonnes and an overall length of nearly 250 metres, designed for the industrial-scale offshore farming of salmonids.
The vessel is operated by Jiangsu Lianshen Marine Technology, a company backed by state-owned enterprises in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province. In fact, it is currently farming triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), although Chinese media generally refer to the fish as salmon.
According to the Chinese marine aquaculture technology company, the vessel operates year-round in offshore areas located more than 30 nautical miles from the coast and at depths exceeding 30 metres.
This allows it to remain away from land-based pollution sources and benefit from the ocean’s natural self-purification capacity. Likewise, the low temperatures found in deeper waters provide ideal conditions for the farming of cold-water species.
Additionally, the intelligent and intensive aquaculture management system onboard includes sensors that collect real-time data and monitor key parameters such as water quality, oxygen levels, feeding, lighting, and pollution.
Furthermore, the Suhai No. 1 features the world's first onboard primary salmon processing center, enabling automated processing from harvest to packaging. The fish are then sent to a certified shore-based facility for further processing before nationwide distribution through a cold-chain logistics network.
