The hatchery project for FBU-NAQUA (National Aquaculture Group) in Al Lith, Saudi Arabia, is now a reality, following MAT-KULING's formal launch of the procurement, supply, and construction phase.

MAT-KULING is providing this initiative with compact recirculating aquaculture systems designed for large-scale fry production. Thanks to this technology, up to 40 million barramundi (Lates calcarifer) fry can be produced annually.

Specifically, the project includes 4 broodstock systems, 3 larval rearing systems, and dedicated systems for live feed production (rotifers and Artemia). In addition, it will incorporate 85 prefabricated tanks of various sizes, combining durable thermoplastic solutions.

The agreement between NAQUA and the Norwegian company was signed in May 2025 by Dr. Dusan Munjin, Chief Aquaculture Officer at NAQUA, along with Mr. Taner Bilgic, General Manager and CTO, and Mr. Bjørn Dørum, Chairman of the Board at MAT-KULING.

The hatchery will have a main building area of 3,412 m² and a total constructed area of 4,143 m². It will feature advanced feeding technologies, PLC-based automation with HMI interfaces, independent recirculation loops, and strict biosecurity zoning, ensuring precision, reliability, and sustainability.

"This project sets a new benchmark for modern hatchery development in the Middle East, highlighting MAT-KULING’s ability to deliver large-scale, integrated, and high-performance aquaculture infrastructure for demanding environments," states a MAT-KULING LinkedIn post.

Just last week, it was confirmed that Saudi Arabia will host the world’s largest single-cell protein plant. Unibio has partnered with the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG) to build a 50,000-tonne UniProtein® production facility.
