Norwegian company Hardingsmolt AS, which produces salmon smolt and post-smolt, has ordered two new GreenBag cages from fellow Norwegian company Merdslippen.
GreenBag cages from Merdslippen are a type of closed or semi-closed farming system used in aquaculture, especially for raising young salmon (post-smolt) in the sea.
With delivery scheduled for next autumn, Hardingsmolt will expand its production capacity to strengthen its position as one of Norway's leading producers of smolt in closed sea-based systems.
Since 2019, the salmon smolt producer has been using these systems in Koløy, Fitjar, on the west coast of Norway. In 2021, they continued using them, reaching a total production of 11 million post-smolt over seven years. During this period, only one case of sea lice was recorded.
"The decision to add two more GreenBags shows that Hardingsmolt wants to further invest in the most careful solution on the market for closed production. And above all, it shows that the technology is mature enough. We have taken the necessary time to develop a closed-bag solution that has proven to work over time," said Vidar Vangen, CEO of Merdslippen.
In the same line, Frode Sandven, CEO of Hardingsmolt, stated: "Seven years of collaboration with Merdslippen have given us full confidence that GreenBag is also the right choice for us in the years ahead. With a total of six GreenBags, we will be able to further increase the production of robust post-smolt, and we look forward to the delivery."
Also, ScaleAQ had sold its first closed containment fish farming cage to Hardingsmolt in 2025. One of the most notable features of this project is how the water flow is managed, with very low energy consumption and highly reliable pumps.
