NTT Communications

Updated on

The Japanese telecommunications giant NTT Communications Corporation, through its subsidiary NTT Aqua Co., Ltd., has developed an ICT-enabled land-based aquaculture system to improve sustainability and regional revitalization in the food sector of the Asian country.

NNT Com, with the help of Benihito Co., Ltd., a company focused on land-based aquaculture and seedling production, began testing this system in 2023 in the village of Ogimi, Okinawa Prefecture. Initially, it will be used for two types of grouper cultivation, and the range of target fish species will gradually expand.

The plan is to provide support to land-based aquaculture businesses, from seedlings to the shipping of adult fish, including the provision of grouper seedlings and feed optimally for each species. Moreover, NTT Green & Food is working on creating a system that detects fish abnormalities.

Uncertain Japanese future

According to NTT Com, there is a threat that the declining birthrate and aging population in Japan could be accelerated by the lack of appeal of living in rural areas. Through new industries, the telecommunications company aims to inject popularity into these areas.

Climate change and the increasing global demand for food have also made strengthening food security an ongoing topic of conversation in the country.

In this regard, land-based aquaculture welcomes anyone who wants to get involved in this field without the need for prior experience and makes use of facilities that have become obsolete.

Almost a month ago, the Japanese railway company Shikoku Railway Company, better known as JR Shikoku, confirmed its plans to build a new land-based salmon farm in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture.
