The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and King Abdulaziz University are involved in a project aimed at producing 100,000 tons of salmon annually.
The Excellence Center for Salmon Production, which covers 10,000 square meters and was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Hail Region, is the largest salmon production plant in the Middle East.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Al-Mushaiti, and the President of King Abdulaziz University, Dr. Tareef Alaama.
The Excellence Center features hatcheries with an annual capacity of 5 million salmon juveniles, a fish farming unit producing 100 tons of commercial-size salmon, and an aquaponics system capable of producing 10 tons of vegetables and fruits annually in its first phase.
According to King Abdulaziz University, all these innovations aim to reduce the Kingdom's reliance on salmon imports, which currently stand at 23,000 tons annually, while supporting local production and food security.
"This project exemplifies the goals of Vision 2030 by enhancing food security, promoting sustainable development, and creating economic opportunities," said Prince Abdulaziz.
In February, SIMEC Aquafish 2024, the first diversified marine exhibition in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was celebrated. This exhibition aimed to attract local and international organizations in the aquaculture, fisheries, and seafood industries, as well as other marine sectors.
