Ireland's seafood development agency Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) has released a new resource for the country's aquaculture sector to help tackle the threat of invasive species.

Marking Invasive Species Week, which takes place from 12 to 15 May 2025, BIM has produced a series of invasive species "ID cards" aiming to support farmers in identifying and dealing with any such species they encounter.

According to BIM, the resource is part of the organization's "invasive alien species work programme", which is supported by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, aiming "to enhance data and empower the aquaculture sector through awareness training, risk assessment and biosecurity planning".

"Invasive species are recognised as one of the key drivers of biodiversity loss in addition to climate change, overexploitation, changes in land and sea use and pollution," BIM stated, announcing the resource.

Further information, including the invasive species ID cards, can be found on the BIM website.
