VinEnergo, the energy company of Vietnam's Vingroup, has announced a strategic partnership with SunAsia Energy to integrate renewable energy generation with aquaculture in the Philippines.

The initiative aims to develop a portfolio of large-scale renewable energy projects using the solar-on-stilts model. Over their lifetime, these projects are expected to generate more than US$1.5 billion in revenue.

The initial plan is to commission three projects in Macabebe, Pampanga and Sagay between 2027 and 2028, with a combined capacity of 422 MWp. Together, they are expected to power around 278,000 homes while reducing annual carbon emissions by more than 460,000 tonnes.

The 18-month engineering and implementation phase will include selecting contractors and technology providers to install nearly 700,000 solar panels on pile-supported structures, along with 62 km of new transmission lines.

Mounting solar panels above the water surface enables the integration of clean energy generation with aquaculture. This approach aligns with the Food-Energy-Water Nexus strategy, aimed at optimising resource use and creating long-term value for communities.

"Floating solar not only contributes to addressing energy security challenges, but also provides a valuable opportunity to share Vietnam’s development experience in protecting local livelihoods and fostering the parallel growth of the energy and agricultural sectors," assured Nguyen Anh Khoa, Chief Executive Officer of VinEnergo.

Moreover, Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of SunAsia Energy Inc., Tetchi Capellan, noted: "This partnership is driven by the shared commitment of SunAsia Energy and VinEnergo to strengthen energy security, support economic growth, improve people’s lives, and help protect the planet. Through the floating solar model, we are not only developing renewable energy infrastructure but also creating a framework where food production and clean energy generation can thrive together."
