Workshop held by the IEO Vigo Oceanographic Center on Aquaculture Day in 2022.
Instituto Español de Oceanografía
The oceanographic centers in Vigo, Murcia, and the Canary Islands of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) are organizing workshops and visits to the cultivation plant during November and December to celebrate Spanish Aquaculture Day.
With this initiative, the IEO aims to highlight the role of aquaculture in society and showcase the work the institute has been doing in this field for over forty years.
Aquaculture Day is promoted by the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory (OESA), coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation, since 2012, to raise awareness in society about the importance of aquaculture in the country.
Moreover, Spain will have the first restorative aquaculture center in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This was presented at the Global Seafood Expo in Barcelona celebrated in April 2024. The center will be located in La Rapita, Cataluña, and is expected to open by the end of 2024.
The scientific outreach project "CIMAR: Marine Science with the Five Senses," organized by the Vigo Oceanographic Center, brings science, technology, and the research and advisory activities carried out by the center to groups with different types of disabilities in an inclusive way.
Workshops have been held at the Down Vigo facilities to present, in an engaging and participatory manner, the work done by the Oceanographic Center, with a particular focus on its work in the aquaculture field.
The Murcia Oceanographic Center will organize visits to its Experimental Marine Cultures Plant for primary and secondary school students and the general public.
During the guided tour, visitors will observe fish in their cultivation tanks, view auxiliary cultures (zooplankton and phytoplankton) in the laboratory through a binocular microscope, and participate in a fish weight and size sampling.
For its part, the Canary Islands Oceanographic Center has organized talks and workshops in educational centers to introduce aquaculture to students. Staff from the Marine Cultures Plant at the Oceanographic Center will present this activity and promote marine-origin product consumption as part of a healthy diet.
The activities will include interactive presentations, displays of various materials related to aquaculture, and practical activities or workshops adapted to the participants' age groups.
