The salmon producer Swiss Blue Salmon AG has confirmed that the building application it has submitted for its future land-based fish farm in Mollis, Glarus Nord, will be available for public review.

In June 2024, the Swiss company secured initial financing from Glarus Cantonal Bank's Foundation before it formally applied for the construction permit in Autumn 2024.

This facility will feature a modern land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) that will produce approximately 2,500 tonnes of salmon per year. It is expected to replace more than 10% of imported salmon in Switzerland.

The company responsible for designing the RAS system has been the Norwegian company VAQ. This company specializes in the design and construction of land-based aquaculture facilities.

In addition, water from Lake Walen will be used for passive cooling, and unlike in other countries such as Norway, this farming method prevents fish and pollutants from escaping into the natural environment.

The Mollis plant will create approximately 50 jobs, and its investment amounts to around 180 million Swiss francs, making this project a significant benefit for local businesses, service providers, and Swiss society as a whole.

Up to this point, the fish farm in Glarus Nord has been financed by Swiss private investors. After obtaining the building permit, the next phase will be taken over by institutional investors.

Finally, Swiss Blue Salmon has created a booklet containing all the details of the project, which will be mailed to residents. It also includes a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section.
