Thor Salmon has broken ground for its smolt facility in Thorlakshofn, South Iceland, the company announced through a publication in its LinkedIn profile.
The first phase of construction formally began with the turning of the first shovels of dirt by Elliði Vignisson, mayor of the Ölfus municipality, and Þórður Þórðarson, lawyer for Thor Salmon and one of the founders.
First, the smolt facility will be established. Subsequently, a grow-out facility will be constructed, where an estimated 5,000 tonnes of salmon will be produced annually. Thor aims to produce 20,000 tonnes of salmon per year in the future.
Thor Salmon has signed an agreement with Trefjar for the production and installation of tanks and related equipment for our smolt facility.
Trefjar is the largest production company in Iceland specializing in fiberglass construction. It has molds in many shapes and sizes, but also builds fish tanks and other equipment in any size, depending on the needs.
Iceland is making an effort to minimize the environmental impact of aquaculture. This is why, the Icelandic Environmental Fund of Aquaculture announced in June additional funds to prevent fish escapes in Iceland.
