The UK's Young Aquaculture Society (YAS) has today announced the winners of its Early Career Innovators Competition, celebrating remarkable contributions from emerging talents in the field.

Máirín-Rua Ní Aodha, a veterinary surgeon at Mowi Scotland, clinched first place with her project utilizing AI to enhance fish welfare, impressing judges with its potential impact.

The runner-up was University of Glasgow PhD researcher William Barr, who secured second place with his technology-driven Algal Monitoring Plan that addresses harmful algal blooms (HABs), while Scottish Association for Marine Science MSc student Federico Di Buccio earned third place for his farm public awareness initiative that promotes transparency in aquaculture.

Announcing the winners, the Young Aquaculture Society said the competition highlighted a strong field of entries, all noted for their innovation, making the judging process challenging.

The society extended gratitude to both the participants for their groundbreaking ideas and the judges—Cheri Arvonio, Amina Sarr-Moss, Marie Smedley, Jarl van den Berg, and Callum Duggan—for their expertise.

More details on the winners and their projects will be shared soon, with hopes for the winners to be featured at the Young Aquaculture Society's official launch during the trade show Aquaculture UK, which takes place in Aviemore, Scotland from May 14-15, 2024.
