The North Atlantic Seafood Forum has confirmed the final contenders for its 2026 Sustainability Award, having launched the accolade for the first time this year to highlight environmental leadership in the sector.

The newly-created award attracted seven nominations this year, with the three finalists now confirmed as Seafish's Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling tool (SCEPT), international seafood certification body the Marine Stewardship Council, and algal oil manufacturer Veramaris.

The Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool, known as SCEPT, was developed by the UK public body representing the seafood sector, Seafish, to quantify greenhouse gas emissions linked to seafood production and distribution. The tool, launched in 2024, maps emissions throughout different stages of the supply chain, aiming to help companies identify reduction opportunities and track their environmental performance.

The second entity in the running is the Marine Stewardship Council, an international non-profit body that establishes benchmarks for responsible fishing practices, operating a global certification scheme and ecolabel for wild fisheries.

Meanwhile, the third contender for the inaugural award is Veramaris, which manufactures EPA and DHA omega-3 oils derived from microalgae as an alternative to sourcing these ingredients from wild fish stocks.

NASF said the jury overseeing the process includes Minna Epps of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Johan Frostrup from Debio and Øyvind Ihle of Claritas Consulting. The winner is due to be announced at the NASF Sustainability Summit, part of NASF 2026, on 3 March.
