F3 – Future of Fish Feed

Updated on

The global collaboration group F3 – Future of Fish Feed has launched a challenge to promote innovation in aquaculture feeds and reward fish farms that prioritize this transformation.

The F3 Fish Farm Challenge encourages aquaculture farms to adopt feeds that do not rely on marine ingredients such as fishmeal, fish oil, or krill, thereby promoting a more responsible and resilient aquaculture production.

The challenge consists of two categories: a two-year competition that rewards farms already producing and selling carnivorous fish with marine-ingredient-free feeds, and a four-year competition that rewards farms implementing new feed innovations or those raising slower-growing fish species.

The four winning farms will receive a share of a total prize pool of $200,000. Winners will be selected based on the amount of carnivorous fish raised and sold on marine-ingredient-free feeds.

"By incentivizing farms to adopt marine-ingredient-free feeds, the F3 Challenge not only helps preserve marine ecosystems but also strengthens global food security by making seafood production more stable and less reliant on finite natural resources," states the organization's press release.

F3 – Future of Fish Feed

F3 – Future of Fish Feed is a collaborative effort between NGOs, researchers, and private partnerships to accelerate and support the scaling of innovative, substitute aquaculture feed ingredients such as bacterial meals, plant-based proteins, algae, and yeast to replace wild-caught fish.

The F3 Team welcomes collaboration with governments, NGOs, and companies to attain the goal of sustainable feeds in agriculture and aquaculture, so that our shared future becomes more sustainable.
