MiAlgae, a Scottish biotech company focused on developing microalgae-based Omega-3 products as ingredients for aquafeed and other products, has expanded its leadership team with the appointment of pharmaceutical ingredients expert Jerome Quiohilag as Associate Director.

The new hire comes as the company moves forward with plans to scale its operations both domestically and internationally, the company announced.

MiAlgae utilises by-products from the whisky industry to grow microalgae, providing a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to fish-derived Omega-3 sources. The company was named a finalist in the Earthshot Prize last year, following the commercial-scale production of its NaturAlgae product at a demonstrator site in Scotland.

MiAlgae says it is now working on constructing an industrial-scale production facility, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2025.

Quiohilag joins MiAlgae from Veranova, a multinational pharmaceutical manufacturer, where he was responsible for overseeing the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). He brings over a decade of experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing, having "successfully led high-performing teams across diverse manufacturing environments, directing operations to meet strategic business objectives whilst driving efficiency and process optimisation", according to a MiAlgae press announcement.

"This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing company with a clear mission and global ambition," Quiohilag said. "I look forward to applying my expertise to scale operations and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future."

According to Douglas Martin, Founder and Managing Director of MiAlgae, Quiohilag’s appointment will support the company’s growth trajectory. "We’re thrilled to welcome Jerome at this exciting time for MiAlgae.  His expertise will be crucial as we scale up to meet growing demand and continue driving biotech innovation," Martin said.
