The Scottish biotech company focused on developing microalgae-based Omega-3 products as ingredients for aquafeed and other products, MiAlgae, has confirmed the construction of a new production facility in Grangemouth, Scotland.
The first phase of this project will create over 100 sustainable jobs and will continue to offer retraining opportunities for workers transitioning from the oil and gas industry.
Since MiAlgae repurposes by-products from the whisky industry as a cultivation method, the location of the new facility has been chosen near distilleries and customers in the Central Belt of Scotland.
"This location offers an ideal position to support our scaling efforts and meet the increasing demand for our biotech for good solutions, with the creation of green jobs across engineering, production, and research and development. We are confident that this new facility will help build a greener future and bring high-quality, sustainable jobs to the local community," assured Douglas Martin, Founder and CEO of MiAlgae.
Additionally, he said: "We're also proud to be involved in Project Willow, which encourages green industries to establish themselves in Grangemouth, contributing to the area's transformation into a hub for green technologies. We’re looking forward to working closely with local stakeholders and the Scottish Government to make this vision a reality."
In 2024, MiAlgae secured £14 million (EUR 16.8m / USD 18.6m) in funding. The oversubscribed funding round saw new investors SWEN Blue Ocean, Clay Capital, and Rabo Ventures join MiAlgae's existing backers, such as Equity Gap and Scottish Enterprise, providing crucial support for MiAlgae's growth plans.
