The Skretting-managed Tunga joint venture has inaugurated its new aquafeed production plant in Nairobi, Kenya, named Growing Capacities, Growing Communities.
Two indirect subsidiaries of the agro-industrial Unga Group also collaborate in this open joint venture: Unga Farm Care (EA) Limited in Kenya and Unga Millers (U) Limited in Uganda.
With this new plant, Tunga Nutrition Kenya will increase the production capacity of its jointly owned fish feed facility in Nairobi from 24,000 metric tons to 45,000 metric tons and will market these products under the Skretting and Fugo brands.
In more detail, the new facility incorporates modern extrusion technology, enhanced safety and quality assurance systems, with a strong focus on sustainability, including a zero-carbon biomass boiler for steam generation.
"Today marks a defining moment for Tunga/ Skretting and for aquaculture in East Africa; for us. Our new plant positions us to serve farmers with world-class feed, while improving consistency, affordability, and supply reliability," said the General Manager, Tunga Nutrition (K) Limited, Harrison Juma.
Additionally, Tunga Nutrition Uganda will utilize Unga Millers' former dormant flour mill in Kampala to produce animal feeds and concentrates. Its products, in turn, will be marketed under Trouw Nutrition’s Hendrix brand and Unga’s Fugo brand.
Finally, the plant is also expected to serve Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and neighboring markets, contributing to food security and enhancing the profitability of farmers across the region.
Unga Farm Care is the leading manufacturer and marketer of a wide range of high-quality animal nutrition and health products in the region. In response to the growing demand for fish protein to improve food security in East Africa, Unga Holdings Ltd —a manufacturer of human and animal nutrition products— invested in the fish feed plant.
Unga and Skretting have been working together since 2017 and have now formalized their partnership through the creation of Tunga Nutrition.
