Japanese seafood giant Maruha Nichiro Corporation has announced that its Board of Directors has decided to change its trade name to 'Umios', which means "ocean" or "sea" in Japanese.
Similarly, the company has developed a new management plan called For the ocean, for life 2027 which will last from the fiscal year ending March 2026 to the fiscal year ending March 2028.
This new identity and philosophy aims to transform the company into a "solution provider" for global social issues arising from the growing and emerging environmental changes while focusing on sustainability.
Finally, Maruha Nichiro will prioritize strengthening the value of health in its business motivations and foster a culture of "challenge" and "co-creation" that supports value creation.
Maruha y Nichiro was born as pioneers in the fishing industry, playing a key role in the evolution of modern fishing and seafood processing as fishing companies.
Subsequently, the two companies merged in 2007, creating the foundation for a comprehensive food enterprise.
With the word 'Umi,' they return to the Group's origins when the focus was on a commitment to solving global social issues through food.
In 2022, Mitsubishi Corporation and Maruha Nichiro Corporation announced the launch of a new project for a land-based salmon farm using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in Japan.
