Aldi Australia is celebrating after winning big at the MSC and ASC Sustainable Seafood Awards. At the 2025 edition, the Australian subsidiary of the German-based supermarket chain was recognized as an Aquaculture Champion for the second year in a row, as well as winning the award for Best Responsible Retailer and Best Responsible Seafood Retailer from ASC.

The awards, which recognize individuals and organizations working to contribute to the Marine Stewardship Council's (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) mission of promoting sustainable fishing practices and responsible fish farming, were held last week in Sydney.

Industry leaders from across Australia's seafood sector gathered to celebrate the stakeholders paving the way for a more sustainable future for oceans and blue foods. "From fisheries and retailers to chefs, environmental advocates, and educational institutions, this event brought together the people making a real impact on seafood sustainability," said the MSC in a LinkedIn post on the event.

"Aldi customers can be confident they're making a good difference"

According to an article published by MSC on SustainabilityTracker.com - a company that centralizes companies' sustainability data through an app that helps people make informed decisions about the brands and products they endorse, and of which MSC is a member - growing awareness of environmental issues is driving Australians and businesses to choose more environmentally friendly seafood.

Australian seafood shoppers prioritize sustainability, and in the last year spent almost AUD 400 million on more than 365 MSC-certified sustainable seafood products. As a result, the volume of MSC-certified seafood products sold in Australia has tripled in the last ten years, with double-digit sales growth compared to five years ago.

It is in this context that Aldi won the 2025 ASC MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia. "These wins are a fantastic endorsement of the work ALDI is doing to make sustainable seafood choices more accessible for all Australians," said Daniel Baker, Director of National Sustainability at ALDI Australia.

"To win three Aquaculture Stewardship Council awards, including the Best Responsible Retailer for the third year in a row, reflects the effort and commitment of our team to work with globally recognised certification bodies to source seafood products responsibly," he continued.

"We're proud to offer everyday value on our fish and seafood products without compromising on taste, quality or the planet. This means Aldi customers can be confident they're making a good difference every time they shop with us," Daniel Baker concluded.

Aldi's UK subsidiary received a similar award in 2023 when it was named MSC UK Mid-Scale Retailer of the Year for expanding its range of certified sustainable seafood products. In addition, globally, last January Aldi South Group became the first food retailer to include the new MSC Improvement Program in its sourcing policy.
