Aker renews its collaboration with AION to reduce packaging waste

Since 2010, Aker BioMarine has been working to promote environmental care as a Norwegian company specialized in circular design and sustainable operations.
"With AION managing the process end to end, we can ensure that more of the plastic from our operations is recovered and reused," said CEO Matts Johansen.

Aker BioMarine and Aker QRILL Company have announced an expanded collaboration with AION to improve the performance and efficiency of bulk packaging. This process enables the use, recovery, and, where possible, the reprocessing of this packaging into new industrial products.

AION is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of bulk packaging products — from sourcing and quality control to increasing collection, recycling, and reintegration of materials.

Thanks to this collaboration, the proportion of plastic that remains in circulation will increase through the implementation of data-driven circular processes. Additionally, collaboration with suppliers will be encouraged to apply mono-material design principles.

"With AION managing the process end to end, we can ensure that more of the plastic from our operations is recovered and reused — turning what was once waste into a resource," said Matts Johansen, CEO of Aker BioMarine and Chair of Aker QRILL Company.

For example, AION already provides polypropylene (PP) “big bags” for krill-based products, which are recycled into new industrial goods such as pallets and secondary packaging and reduces the need for virgin plastic and CO₂ emissions.

Regarding this, AION's CEO, Ed Dehnert noted: "By offering specialized data, design, and operational support, we're transforming the way packaging is managed for Aker BioMarine and Aker QRILL Company, that means fewer risks, smarter use of materials, and less plastic waste at every step of production."

Additionally, Johansen indicated: "For us, circularity doesn't stop at packaging. Our work in Antarctica is built on the same principle — that sustainable use and protection must go hand in hand."

Last month, Aker BioMarine and Aker QRILL Company declared their active support for the Argentina–Chile initiative, which aims to protect 455,957 km² of ocean — nearly 70% of the Antarctic Peninsula — including krill spawning grounds and key habitats for penguins, seals, and whales.
