The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Fisheries Science of South Korea (NIFS) to promote responsible aquaculture and support biodiversity.
The NIFS is a leading research institution in the field of aquaculture and marine science, operating under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of South Korea. Thanks to this agreement, the sustainable growth of sustainably farmed seafood production will be supported in the Asian country.
The key areas of collaboration between the entities will be the development of innovative technologies, the exchange of information between international experts, and the creation of certification technologies.
"This is an important step forward in strengthening international partnerships and advancing responsible seafood farming practices that benefit fish, farm, people, and planet. Together, we are setting a new standard for the future of Korea's seafood sector through environmental and social responsibility," ASC CEO Chris Ninnes said.
Moreover, NIFS President Choi Yong-seok noted: "With the fisheries industry undergoing rapid changes due to climate change and other factors, this MOU serves as a starting point for transitioning to eco-friendly aquaculture industry. We hope that this collaboration with the ASC will present a standard model for sustainable aquaculture and strengthen the export competitiveness of Korean farmed seafood."
