Canadian Aquaculture Industry urges government to produce more sustainable food

The Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) has signed an open letter calling on the Federal Government to make food security and food supply a top policy priority.

Moreover, the letter requests two main urgent tasks to be completed. Firstly, to make secure food production and supply a top consideration in policy and funding decisions. Prioritizing food security and productivity in the policy and decision-making process. Secondly, to focus on an agile, modern regulatory environment that supports production growth. This should be in line with the 2019 Agri-Food and Aquaculture Roadmap.

Finally, the letter, signed by Timothy Kennedy, president, and CEO of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, states: "With the war in Ukraine, ongoing challenges from Covid, global supply chain problems, and environmental shocks from climate change, Canadians and citizens around the world are facing higher food costs and food shortages. These shortages will disproportionately affect the poor. It is time for Canada to intensify food production to sustainably and affordably feed Canadians and the world".

"The current situation calls for a major renewed policy. That should focus on optimizing Canada's food production and Canadian food producers. Suppliers are calling on the Prime Minister and Cabinet to take critical immediate action," it added.

In late April, researchers at Dalhousie University encourage the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans to consider both ocean and land-based salmon farming.
