Certified Seafood International
The organization that offers ecological certification programs for seafood, Certified Seafood International (CSI), has announced that it will offer a new option for wild-caught seafood certification.
Through greater accessibility, effectiveness, and ecological focus, the new distinction will expand access to high-performing fisheries and promote greater transparency about the seafood we consume.
"Credible third-party certification programs have an important role to play in recognizing responsible management practices and providing assurance to the market. We are pleased that CSI will expand the choices available to global seafood stakeholders," assured Christine Penney, Chair of the CSI Board and Vice President of Sustainability and Public Affairs at Clearwater Seafoods.
In addition, the organization has explained that the certificates and standards of the GSSI-backed Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) program will join CSI, bringing together 3 million metric tons of fishery landings that are subject to certification.
Furthermore, the program's new global governing board includes individuals from Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Regarding this, CSI Executive Director Mike Kraft confirmed: "The CSI Program will assess fisheries against a clear and rigorous Fisheries Standard grounded in the Guidelines of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO)."
"We believe that a stable standard focused on fisheries management and based on internationally recognized UN principles, provides clarity and consistency that is vital for fisheries striving to achieve certification," he concluded.
Certified Seafood International (CSI) delivers a competitive new third-party certification program with global reach and chain of custody, with the ability to identify harvest origin on the eco-label.
Benchmarked by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), CSI audits fisheries management against a clear and rigorous Fisheries Standard grounded in the globally recognized guidance of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
In March, GSSI became an Affiliated Partner of MarinTrust. This affiliation also brings expertise from different parts of the supply chain to strengthen sustainability efforts from raw materials to final products.
