The Irish investor Hatch Blue Revolution Fund, which specializes in sustainable aquaculture, has led a funding round to foster the growth of the food technology company SuperGround.
SuperGround will use the €2.5 million in funding to increase and internationalize its production and establish new partnerships, particularly in the European market.
The Finnish company's priority is to reduce food industry waste and promote sustainably produced fish use. It has patented a unique technology that enables the full utilization of fish in the food industry.
According to SuperGround, up to 70% of caught or farmed fish is not used for human consumption but rather ends up as feed or fertilizer.
"We are proud of our Finnish innovation that has generated international interest. Hatch Blue Revolution Fund’s investment highlights the significance of Finnish food tech expertise on a global scale," said SuperGround CEO Jaakko Kaminen.
Moreover, the Managing Partner at Hatch Blue added: "If the world will in fact run into a shortage of low-cost fish and poultry-based protein, which will depend heavily on how governments are going to subsidize mass animal production in the future and how vegetarian, vegan, and cell-based alternatives will catch up, then SuperGround’s technology is perfectly placed to become a global standard in fish and poultry downstream processing."
The Blue Revolution Fund (BRF) was established by Hatch Blue. Its investments are targeted at next-generation fish farms, regenerative seaweed, and bivalve farming, nutrition, enabling technology, health and genetics, and alternative seafood.
In October 2024, it surpassed its original fundraising target, securing €93 million (approximately USD 100m) in commitments, the Nature Conservancy announced.
Hatch Blue and The Nature Conservancy have indicated they will release guidance resources in 2025, explaining pre-investment conservation diligence, portfolio impact measurement, and reporting in the aquaculture impact investment sector.
