Taste of BC Aquafarms achieves its first batch of Chinook salmon
In the second quarter of 2022, Taste of BC Aquafarms, a wholly-owned RAS subsidiary by Blue Star Foods Corp., has hatched its first batch of Chinook Salmon. According to Blue Star Foods, the fish are performing well in growth trials with good FCR, growth, and very low mortality. Further, the plan is to raise them to an average size of 3kg.
In December of 2021, the company entered into a 2-year agreement to supply Steelhead salmon fingerlings to another company that produces steelhead salmon in British Columbia. The value seems to be $1 million in total. The first delivery of those fingerlings will be in Q3-2022. Finally, its new will be ready in the third quarter of 2022.
Regarding this, Ben Atkinson, president of Taste of BC said: "At the end of Q2-2022, we finished with standing biomass of 40MT in our facility. This was originally designed for 27MT, without compromising water conditions or fish performance."
Also, he explained: "The first six months of 2022 have been focused on increasing standing biomass within our pilot facility as we continue to limit test system capabilities. We are extremely pleased with the capabilities of our pilot system. It provides a solid foundation upon which we are designing our forthcoming expansion."
